Escape to Mexico at Casa Borrega, New Orleans

Blue Agave

Step up to the bar – a piece of rescued pew from a Katrina-flooded Canal Street church – and sample from the curated collection of 30 tequilas and 100+ mezcals, Mexican liquors distilled from the Blue Agave. A few of these spiky cacti adorn Casa Borrega’s front garden.

Tequila is made by steaming agave in industrial ovens before being distilled in copper pots. Mezcal is cooked in earthen pits lined with lava rocks and filled with wood and charcoal then distilled in clay pots. Hence the smoky, earthy flavor of mezcal. Blue Agave Cocktails

Many customers opt for blue agave cocktails, such as the Margarita Borrega, Margarita Du Jour, Mezcal Margarita, spicy Mezcalinda or Diablo, or Borrega Mule. The Margarita Borrega offers a simple, tart and potent mix of tequila, blood orange liquor, fresh lime juice, organic agave nectar and a splash of soda. The Mezcal Margarita follows this recipe with smoky mezcal replacing the tequila. Owner Hugo Montero, a Mexico City native, served as judge for the tequila cocktail competition at the last Top Taco celebration.

Mexican Beer and Micheladas

Casa Borrega provides a complete Mexican beer selection that includes favorites and lesser known brands from Corona, Pacifico and Tecate, to Negra Modelo, Superior, Bohemia, Dos Equis and Victoria (from Mexico City). The Michelada combines the beer of your choice with a tangy tomato, lime and spice mixture and salted rim. Delicioso! Occasionally Montero serves the Micheladas in a glass rimmed with Gulf Shrimp.

Fresh-made limonada is always available at the bar made with lime, agave nectar and soda. And any cocktail can be created in a virgin version.
